Description: The descriptive name of this native grass hits the mark when describing the eye-catching seed head it forms. As the seed heads dry out and turn yellow, their bristles twist and loop around into delicate and distinctive "needles." A common native grass across the prairies, green needle grass makes an attractive addition in both small and large landscapes. Thriving in a variety of conditions from part shade to full sun and moist to well drained soils, green needle grass can be used to fill in hard to grow spots. It is often found in nature associated with flowering plants including yarrow, pussytoes, cactuses, American vetch and shrubs including wild rose, sagebrush, potentilla and saskatoons. It will fit easily into most urban and rural landscapes.

Found in Nature: Dry prairies, open woods, disturbed areas particularly open railroads.

Distribution: Throughout North America

Notes: Latin genus recently changed from Stipa to Nassella

Important Information: The "Bloom Period" is an indicator of the time period within which the wildflowers will bloom and does not describe the time period that a single plant will bloom. The "Sizes" listed are intended to be a general guideline to consult during plant selection. Plant growth and bloom times will vary depending on geographical location & individual site conditions.
