Alpine Paintbrush
Castilleja rhexifolia |
Description: These paintbrushes come in shades of crimson, rose, pinks and mauves, often two toned with creamy blushes. Blooming from June to August they are a favorite of Hummingbirds as well as people. They are tricky to propagate as they are part parasitic and need to attach their roots system to another plant in order to up take the nutrients they need; this means they are hard to grow in containers but do well once planted. In the Chinook zone, paintbrushes should be planted where they will have snow cover in the winter.
Found in Nature: Well drained open wooded sites.
