Description: Chive-like stems give rise to beautiful upright clusters of white flowers in late spring and early summer. Similar in appearance to nodding onion, prairie onion is more tolerant of hot, dry conditions making it great for xeriscaping or full sun beds. A member of the garlic family, prairie onion makes a great addition to the food and pollinator garden. Hummingbirds are attracted to the flowers as are bees, and songbirds will happily eat the seeds that fall to the ground. Prairie onion spreads by seed and is capable of filling in a space quite quickly but is easy to pull out if unwanted. All parts of the plant are edible but care should be taken as mild toxicity has been reported if too much is eaten.
Found in Nature: In full sun prairie, dry/rocky hillsides and roadside ditches
Distribution: Prairie provinces and states up to the Rocky Mountains
Notes: Mildly toxic if large quantities are ingested
Important Information: The "Bloom Period" is an indicator of the time period within which the wildflowers will bloom and does not describe the time period that a single plant will bloom. The "Sizes" listed are intended to be a general guideline to consult during plant selection. Plant growth and bloom times will vary depending on geographical location & individual site conditions.
